He was a pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty during the New Kingdom of ancient Egypt (reigned approximately 1332–1323 BC). His original name was Tutankhamun, meaning “image of Aten,” which he later changed to Tutankhamun, meaning “image of Amun,” indicating that his faith shifted from worshipping Aten to worshipping Amun.

Akhenaten, Tutankhamun’s father, had previously initiated a religious reform, establishing Aten as the principal god, reducing the number of temples and the number of gods worshipped, and even gradually moving towards monotheism in order to weaken the power of traditional religious priests. Three years after Tutankhamun ascended the throne (1331 BC), at the urging of the polytheistic traditional religious priests, or possibly due to a restoration of the actual power, he re-established the god Amun, restored temples, and moved the capital back to Thebes.
